Apr 08, Patricia Grogan Bugher rated it it was amazing. I have enjoyed every book. They love each, have a ten-year-old daughter and a law firm together.

This is another terrific book in this series. Talk about cold. Did not see that coming. There was a lot of pointless running around and subplots in this book.

All the other suspects just seemed to lie for their own benefit. Just chasing whispers. There is no actual courtroom drama in this book which is what attracted me to the series in the first place so I was disappointed by that.

Rosie and Mike - I don't know what to think about them anymore. They are told by everyone they should be together but yet they rarely seem to be apart.

I guess I don't really care much either so that is a bad sign. The series like the books are uneven and not gripping enough for me.

Dec 24, Charlette rated it really liked it. Good third book! I enjoyed the book but it didn't grab me the same way as the first two did.

I missed the court room scenes and the suspense of who done it. I guess the subject matter with the other people involved just didn't do it for me or I didn't understand their business.

The guilty person seemed to be a convenient way to end the story in a hurry. Also, reading about Rosie's medical problem hit home with me and made me relive my own nightmares with a similar problem.

Still a good book. I thought it was another good novel in the series, I will read the next one. This one was a little different in the fact that there was really no court room scene but more investigative instead.

That does not mean it was bad just different. I feel that the novel had a good ending to it. I also enjoy the direction the main character. I would say read it.

Fair-to-Good again! The main title characters in this series are believable people. The rest of the folks in this particular book?

I don't know; I'd have to say they stretch the credibility factor. But, I'm mostly an East-coast guy, and perhaps I really know nothing about Hollywood-types?

Could they all really be THAT strange and conniving? Jan 16, Michele rated it really liked it. A solid four stars plus.

I am a big fan of this series, I read 4 in the series earlier and am now backtracking to catch up.

Terrific dynamic characters, plots that make sense, fully engaging stories. I am particularly enjoying these as audiobooks, but the series is worth following in any format.

Did she murder her husband? Sheldon Siegel presents an excellent choice in legal thrillers. This case starts out in the first pages and builds to an interesting climax.

It's a who done it love story I think it's going to be enjoyed by most people. Justice Relationships and Irony I just love this author.

His novels are so full of genuine e feelings, interesting tidbits, and ironic twists. Don't hold your breath, you need to breathe Excellent court procedural.

I was on the edge of my seat hoping they would get their client off. There are so many others that could have been the murderer but how can they prove it?

Great Book Love reading about Mike and Rosie. So glad there are still so many books in the series. Three first 3 were terrific.

Mike Daley, a former priest and public defender, now runs his own defense firm with his ex-wife, Rosie.

This new case involves Rosie's niece, charged with murdering her film producer tycoon husband. Things do not look good and every finger points at her guilt.

This murder appears to be related to the approval of a millionaire development plan in which several Mike Daley, a former priest and public defender, now runs his own defense firm with his ex-wife, Rosie.

This murder appears to be related to the approval of a millionaire development plan in which several very important businesspeople have invested or are at risk of losing millions of dollars.

What I most like about this author is his case development in trials, but when compared with the previous two books, I felt somewhat disappointed with this one.

Too much discussion about the millionaire project and family issues. Great mystery. I was guessing all along, and still got it wrong.

Someone kills a Hollywood director with his Oscar, and everyone he knows could have done it. Love the way Mike narrates with his own comments in and amongst the dialogue.

Rosie seems real, independent, but the voice of perspective. Pete is still my favourite-cynical, smart, and unstoppable in ferreting out information.

I like Kaely Joy, his sidekick in this book, too. I actually really liked Ellis and Petrillo, for some reason.

Oh, Great mystery. Great characters, many stories with layers and interconnections. Really good. Amazing, twisted tale Sheldon Siegel is a master storyteller, hands down one of the most entertaining novelists I've read in years.

With an ever candid flowing inner mind commentary, Michael Daley conducts business with his law partner and ex wife Rosie Fernandez.

They are criminal defense lawyers in San Francisco just working hard to defend their clients and live their lives. Rosie's niece, Angelina needs their help.

She's been accused of murdering her husband. They can't not help, but wha Wow! They can't not help, but what are they getting into? The tale bears reading itself.

I never give spoiler reviews. This author is so great I'm off to read another. Hope you enjoy this one. Movie director Richard MacArthur has been murdered and Rosie's niece, Angelina, is accused as the murderer of her husband.

Things are hectic for all the characters in Mike and Rosie's life, and many secrets are unveiled. This novel is fast-paced and engrossing.

You'll also be surprised at the ending. Excellent, entertaining story. Highly recommended crime thriller. Was his his young starlet wife, Angelina, who also happens to be Rosie's niece?

Richard MacArthur, Junior, who didn't get along with his father? Hollywood insider Martin Kent, who committed suicide shortly after the body was found?

Carl Ellis, from Vegas, who has mucho moolah tied up in the China Basin development project? The "cast" pun intended of characters is large, but the question rema Who murdered the Hollywood producer, "Big Dick" MacArthur, on his own deck, with his own Academy Award?

Sep 03, Lori Shipley rated it liked it. I started with Book 1 of this series and have read through book 4. By the time I got to book 3, I realized that what some of the other reviewers were saying about them being formulaic was true.

While I am not surprised when an author follows somewhat the same pattern or topic, this one is almost exactly the same, with just the names and some of the details changed.

I also noticed a lot more typos in this book. I am becoming disenchanted. May 01, Joe Burke rated it liked it.

A very boring read. The accused turned out to have been guilty all along, so this was a long long way to go to end up with nothing at the end.

The characters were not interesting and the plot skeleton was confusing. Even the love story turned out to fail in the end; man ends affair, goes back to his wife.

Best one of his novels so far Glad Rosie and Mike agree to give coupleship another try Criminal Intent Loved this book. This is the kind of thriller I enjoy reading.

This is the kind of book you can't put down. I recommend this book. Worth reading if you love a good thriller. Jan 25, Marcia rated it really liked it.

Another enjoyable book from Sheldon Siegel This is the third in this series and it was a pleasure to see how the characters are growing yet remain true to their personalities.

I enjoy the dialogue and humor in his books even though the plots are serious. Feb 03, Tina rated it really liked it. This book kept me guessing with the twists and turns.

The characters traveled so much that I got tired! It was amazing that this whole story took place in the span of approximately one week. Wow, I can't wait to read more books by Sheldon Siegel.

They decide that the blue lights out there would be cool to own, so they take turns sneaking out into the field, unscrewing a light bulb, then stashing them in their car.

While exploring, they discover blue lights they would like to have. Being sure the airport is no longer in use, the boys take the lightbulbs, stashing them in their car.

Taking the lights from this private property is against the law. Just what type of charges might be levied against the young men depends on the situation — the difference here is intent.

In Scenario 1, they knew the lights were owned by the airport, and were in use. They knew they were trespassing, and had to know that taking the lights could put others in danger.

Yet, they stole the lights with intent to deprive the rightful owner of them, and to convert them to their own use.

In Scenario 2, they truly believed the airport was no longer being used. While they must have known they were trespassing on private property, they thought they were taking abandoned property — lights that were no longer in use.

They did not intend to deprive the rightful owner. Knowledge is different from intent, in that the criminal is aware of the consequences that can result from his actions, but simply does not care.

For instance, Anna is upset that Charlie is cheating on her, so she plants a bomb in his car. She knows that Charlie will probably be taking Elsa, his mistress, out to dinner that night, and that the bomb could kill both Charlie and Elsa when it goes off.

Anna does not care that Elsa could die too, and she is fully aware that this is the most likely scenario. The bomb does, in fact, explode, killing Charlie and Elsa.

While Anna will be charged with the intent of killing Charlie, she will more than likely also be charged with the knowledge that her actions would also kill Elsa.

For instance, if someone waves a loaded gun around in a crowded room — with no intention of shooting anyone — and the gun goes off anyway and hurts someone, his actions could be an example of criminal intent through recklessness.

The shooter did not intend to hurt anyone, but he knew what could happen if he waved a loaded gun around in a crowd, and he did it anyway.

Negligence is perhaps the mildest form of criminality that anyone can be charged with. Negligence applies when someone failed to live up to his responsibilities, and someone else was injured as a result.

Similarly, if a pet owner allows his pet to become malnourished and dehydrated, then he can be charged with negligence for not living up to his responsibilities as a pet owner.

Malice aforethought is a specialized form of criminal intent that applies to only one crime: murder. Therefore, someone convicted of being in this state is typically punished more severely than any other criminal.

Being convicted of murder with malice aforethought may subject the offender to life in prison without parole, or even the death penalty.

Specific intent is the most severe criminal intent that can apply to any crime that is not murder. However, it is typically accepted that specific intent means that the defendant acted with a significant level of awareness of the consequences that could result from his actions.

Crimes committed with specific intent can usually be grouped into one of the following three categories:. Scienter and mens rea are often used interchangeably.

Scienter can actually form the foundation of specific intent, depending on the statute involved. For example, a statute that makes it a crime to write a bad check may require knowledge that the check is, in fact, written for an amount that the person cannot possibly cover with funds from his bank account.

Therefore, it would be unlawful for that person to pay for something with that check. A good story worthy of page turning, but not so much in the courtroom.

I was entertained well, however, and will read the next book in the series. I've been reading these in order.

Unlike Grafton's characters, these people age a year or two between books with subtle changes in relationships, especially the one between the formerly married Mike and Rosie who can be best friends and soulmates, but not spouses under the same roof, despite their love for their daughter.

In this one, Rosie's movie-star niece is accused of murdering her philandering , movie-mogul husband. Of course, we know it will all turn out OK in the end.

Or will it? No spoil I've been reading these in order. View all 3 comments. Great stories I have read the first three novels and I am hooked!

Not only are the accused in each story complicated, the twists and turns involving Mike and Rosie themselves are complicated also.

Thanks for writing these books. I really enjoy the characters in this series and of course over time their personalities fill out until you feel like you know this bunch.

The law practices are interesting and the cases are not always solved in the courtroom but the twists and turns do deliver the bad guys to justice… almost always.

This time the crime was solved but justice was not served which makes these stories even more authentic. Apr 08, Patricia Grogan Bugher rated it it was amazing.
